"Neko Masshigura" - A place to meet cats in Kyoto - Philosopher's Path

Doesn't this place have a very intellectual and charming name? The Philosopher's Path is a 1.5km walking path built along the Lake Biwa Canal. Starting from Kumano Wakaoji Shrine in the south, the cobblestone path continues north to Ginkakuji Temple. Its name, "Philosopher's Path," is said to come from the Meiji-era philosopher Nishida Kitaro, who would walk along it every morning, lost in thought. Nearby are numerous tourist spots, including Nanzenji Temple and Ginkakuji Temple, making it a popular spot in Kyoto for viewing cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage. Philosopher's Path is also one of Kyoto's most popular cat spots. It's said to have originated when a cat took up residence in a closed coffee shop. With so many cats, you're sure to spot them napping on the path. Once you spot these adorable felines, you'll likely have no time for philosophical reflection. Next on our list is Maruyama Park, one of Kyoto's most famous cherry blossom viewing spots. Built in 1988, Maruyama Park is the oldest park in Kyoto City. It's a strolling garden built on the natural hills of Higashiyama, with ponds and fountains providing a relaxing space. Bordered by Yasaka Shrine to the west, Kodaiji Temple to the south, and Chion-in Temple to the north, the park is always bustling with tourists. While each season offers its own charm, the cherry blossom season is undeniably the most beautiful. The weeping cherry trees in the center of the park, known as "Gion's Night Cherry Blossoms," welcome visitors with their mystical beauty. The cats at Maruyama Park live within a vast 8-square-meter area. For this reason, there doesn't seem to be a specific spot where they're always found. There are many different breeds of cats, including black, calico, and brown and white. Finding a cat napping in the shade while strolling around can be as fun as a treasure hunt. It's even been reported that cats gather at night near Yasaka Shrine. 473 Maruyamacho, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto City, etc. Access : From Kyoto Station, take city buses 100 and 206 and get off at "Gion" ・Get off at Keihan "Gion-Shijo Station" and walk for about 10 minutes ・Get off at Hankyu "Kawaramachi Station" and walk for about 14 minutes

Our final destination is Umekoji Park, an urban park with excellent access from Kyoto Station. Opened in 1995, Umekoji Park offers a natural environment, even though it's only a 15-minute walk from Kyoto Station. Gazing at the blue sky from the lawn, you'll almost forget you're in the middle of the city. The park is home to Kyoto City's first aquarium, the Kyoto Aquarium, and the Kyoto Railway Museum, one of the largest in Japan. It's a fun spot for both children and adults. Cats are scattered throughout Umekoji Park. Thanks to the efforts of animal welfare groups, you'll encounter some tame cats. Most cats won't shy away, so you'll have the chance to not only take photos but also touch their fluffy fur. Since it's close to Kyoto Station, it's worth taking a little trip to visit. 56-3 Kankijicho, Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto City Access : Take city bus routes 33, 33, 58, 86, 88, 205, and 208 and get off at Umekoji Park or JR Umekoji Kyoto-Nishi Station. 15-minute walk west along Shiokoji-dori from the central exit of Kyoto Station (JR, subway, and Kintetsu).
