Description
This hairpin features a celestial motif and is made using the techniques of Wajima lacquerware, a traditional craft from Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture, making use of the deep, beautiful texture of the lacquer.
The lacquer balls, each with a design of the Earth, the Earth at night, the Sun and the Moon, have been carefully painted over multiple layers of lacquer and then finished with maki-e.The original shaft is reminiscent of a globe, and the entire lacquer ball can be turned around to admire, making this a kanzashi that combines traditional techniques with modern sensibilities.
Designer's thoughts
Through repeated trial and error with Wajima lacquer artisans, we designed this kanzashi with a familiar celestial motif, so that the beauty of traditional Wajima lacquerware can be felt more intimately. We also paid special attention to the shaft, so that the beautiful luster and delicate maki-e can be enjoyed as if turning a globe. This is a modern kanzashi that can be worn with a wide range of clothing, from Japanese to Western, while still being a traditional craft.
