Description
This is a folding umbrella, a typical Japanese umbrella shape.
These folding umbrellas are made using the traditional method of pasting washi paper onto a bamboo frame and then finishing with a coat of oil and paint. Each folding umbrella featuring Hokusai graphics is handcrafted by artisans who have continued the tradition to this day. As this work requires not only high skill but also concentration, only a limited number can be made each day. The sound of rain hitting the folding umbrellas, created by this artisanal skill, conveys to the present day the sense of the seasons and natural scenery that Japan once had.
