Description

This is a single hairpin with a motif of a shakujo, a type of ritual implement used in Buddhism and Shugendo.

One theory is that the name comes from the crunchy sound it makes. Depending on its use and sect, it is also called a charin-bo, kakkara, kichira/kikkira, yusei-jo, sei-jo, naki-jo, or chi-jo. Originally, the sound of the staff was used by monks and ascetics (yamabushi) to protect themselves from birds, animals, and poisonous snakes during their mountain pilgrimages. Now, it is believed to remove worldly desires and grant wisdom. It makes a crunchy sound when swung like a real shakujo, making it a recommended gift or talisman. Its long, non-slip wooden shaft makes it easy to keep thick hair in place. It pairs well with Western clothing, kimonos, and yukatas.
